ABOUT WATERBURY YOUTH SERVICES

Waterbury Youth Service System, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization committed to providing services that promote the overall well being of children, youth and families who reside in Waterbury and the 11 surrounding towns.

HISTORY

The Waterbury Youth Service Bureau originated in 1976 when Governor Ella Grasso allocated one million dollars to Connecticut towns to begin community based youth service initiatives. Over the ensuing years, through the acquisition of supplemental grants awarded by local, state and federal government, the Waterbury Youth Service Bureau grew to include a wide range of programming for children, youth and families. In 1985 the Youth Service Bureau became incorporated and changed its name to Waterbury Youth Service System, Inc. The organization subsequently moved to its present location at 95 North Main Street.

PRESENT

Today, with an annual budget of three million dollars and a staff exceeding 80, the agency serves our 3,000 clients annually, through a broad spectrum of programs that address issues impacting today's youth and their families.

WHO WE SERVE

Waterbury Youth Service System has a diverse client base representative of the demographic makeup of the area we serve. While many of our services target at risk youth, we offer extensive programming that is non-targeted and open to any youth who desires to participate. After-School, Positive Youth Development, Summer Youth Employment & School Readiness are examples of such programs. In addition to youth we also serve parents and caregivers through programs such as the Family Ties Parent Classes and Youth & Family Emergency Services. It is by offering programming for both children and parents and treating the family as a whole, that we can be most effective.

OUR GOALS

Developing healthy young people - Promoting positive, responsible relationships for youth with family, peers, school & community - Providing resources & outreach to the community - Preventing tomorrow's crises today.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Waterbury Youth Service System is supported by grants from city, state & federal agencies, foundations, United Way, and the generosity of corporate and individual donors.
