WYSS PEER TO PEER TUTORING

Youth tutors

Research has shown that well-designed tutoring programs that use volunteers and other nonprofessionals as tutors can be effective in improving in all areas of study. Students who are tutored by peer or cross-age tutors often demonstrate higher self-esteem and positive attitudes toward school. Students who are tutored even one to two hours a week will find strong improvement in all areas of study. Although, sometimes it is difficult to get the students to be agreeable to tutoring, by making it a mandatory component of our after school programs majority of the students do comply. Within a short period of time the students see their success in school and at that time the tutoring component becomes an important commitment and one they are willing to make.

The youth also visited the offices of the Waterbury State Representatives and Senators to ask for their support of Senate Bill No. 294-”An Act Prohibiting Open Alcoholic Beverage Containers in Motor Vehicles" & Senate Bill No. 296-"An Act Concerning the Offense of Driving Under the Influence and Ignition Interlock Devices".
