LESSON ON COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The 6th grade class at Chase Collegiate Middle School are learning about the importance of community outreach. They decided to hold a walk-a-thon to raise money for their favorite charity. They raised $748.26 to help local children and families in need and donated it to WYSS.

"Together We Can" is dedicated to those generous individuals and groups in the Greater Waterbury area whose acts of kindness, large and small assist WYSS in accomplishing our mission and making a lasting change in our shared community.

Stock The Pantry 2010

WYSS participated in United Way's Stock the Pantry 2010 by collecting cans of tuna. The tuna was brought to United Way's Stock the Pantry Day of Action on July 21st. The event was held at the CT Food Bank in Waterbury, where United Way was showcasing the Stock the Pantry food drive results. A total of 49 companies & organizations participated; raising a record 6,597 pounds of food. The results prove that “Together We Can” make a difference!!

 

MADE WITH LOVE

Warm Up America Afghan

A beautiful "Warm Up America Afghan” was knitted by members of the B'nai Israel, Southbury, CT’s Social Action Committee Knitting Circle. The afghan was presented to WYSS's Director of Community Relations at a Bat Mitzvah celebration in January. This very special afghan, made with love and full of good wishes, will be given to a child at our Safe Home.

 

A DAY OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

Taft celebrated their 15th annual community service day by sending a team of students to put a fresh coat of paint on our 4th floor conference room.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

LANGUAGE ARTS & CULTURE FAIRLanguage Arts & Culture Fair

Great Ways to Home Educate sponsored a "Language Arts and Culture Fair" on Tuesday, September 15th, at Veteran’s Memorial Park Pavilion in Watertown. Children ages 5-10 were able to play “Go Fish” in sign language, sample Japanese fare, try Irish step dancing, learn Chinese character writing, and close their eyes and read Braille. The event generously donated all the proceeds to help the children at WYSS Rainbow House.

 

COLORTYME DONATIONS

On July 30th ColorTyme of Waterbury generously donated a new Whirlpool stove to WYSS. * "This just made sense to me. I love the people in this city and I felt compelled to support the Waterbury Youth Service System with this donation." said Steve Dwyer, the store's owner. "I had a stove that was a perfect fit for one of their programs and it's exciting to see a void that's now filled. I think supporting organizations like this is essential." YOUTH HELPING YOUTH

Jack donating sports equipement

Jack, an 8th grade student and class president is passionate about sports and about helping youth who may not have the same opportunities. In July, he conducted a community wide used sporting equipment collection to benefit WYSS at the town park. Jack and his sisters dropped off 10 bags of various sports equipment some of which is already being used at our summer camp!! Jack is working on his next project; collecting supplies for back to school.
